THE RELATIONAL MODEL

As an Integrative Counsellor in the Relational Model, I apply myself to the needs of the individual in a way that is appropriate therapeutically. This incorporates psychodynamic, humanistic, behavioural and attachment theories, techniques, and psychoeducational tools. The Relational Model recognises that relationships with significant others in our life shapes our emotional development and how we relate to ourselves. Given our history and experiences, we can become conditioned to unhealthy relational patterns whereby we are not fully ourselves or are connecting to others in the truest sense. This may manifest as depression, anxiety, anger, low self-esteem and more, rooted in a negative cycle of thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and physical symptoms. The Relational model recognises your past to help with your future.

“It’s sometimes the most important shift and change a person can do for themselves in their whole life”

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) is an evidence-based powerful therapy best known for treating PTSD. It is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). It can also help with anxiety, depression, phobias and more.

“My symptoms terrified me and I avoided seeking help, and then I realised my life was already driven by fear”

Trauma can result from stressful events that you experience or witness that overwhelms your sense of safety and ability to fully function. Not everyone knows they have experienced trauma, as it may be rooted in childhood or adult experiences.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

EMDR involves a thorough assessment that will help you understand and assess; how your nervous system responds to overwhelming threat, emotional dysregulation and your readiness for treatment. It is a structured therapy that encourages you to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess the memory properly. Reducing the vividness and emotions associated to the traumatic memory and seeing a different perspective will integrate body and mind.

Flash Technique is usually combined with my EMDR work, it is one of the most recent advances in processing traumatic or distressing memories without clients having to think, feel or discuss memories.

EXPERIENCE

Since qualifying in 2001, I have extensive knowledge and experience working with a wide range of issues in multicultural settings: Occupational Health Counsellor for the Council & NHS, Primary Care Counsellor in GP surgeries, Student Counsellor in Education and Private Practice.

Qualified in teaching, for a number of years I taught a certified course in counselling skills within colleges. This lead on to delivering various psycho-educational courses to staff groups in the NHS to promote health in the workplace.

As an accredited member of both BACP & EMDR, this means I have significant post qualifying experience and have gone through a rigorous assessment process on my practice, professional development and ethical thinking. I have monthly supervision which includes an EMDR consultant.
